Unlike Clark Kent, I look like a totally different person with my glasses off.

My undergraduate degree is in journalism, so I learned how to write words before I ever learned how to write code. I worked for a small newspaper in central Pennsylvania in the mid-nineties, then decided grad school looked pretty good. I moved across the country to Seattle and got my masters in communication and a certificate in technical writing. While in grad school, I started working at Microsoft, where I eventually held many jobs involving both words *and* code. I taught myself HTML and CSS, basically so I wouldn’t have to use FrontPage. I’ve been making and breaking, writing and fighting websites since 1995. And I just finished a degree in library science from Syracuse University, because I love libraries.

My Passions:

  • Being surrounded by people who make stuff, and having a role to play in that process.
  • The power of a well-turned phrase.
  • Sharing a high-five.
  • Understanding how technology — all technology: from a pencil to a PC — can help people learn.
